2008: Hydrogen Economy
In 2008, Brett Levine started False Profit Labs and we, along with a bunch of dedicated “Labsters”, built a 16-foot polycarbonate and steel chamber for the single purpose of containing the explosions of bubbles filled with flammable gasses.
Little did I know five years prior when Brett and I were screwing around at the old warehouse with an oxy-acetylene cutting outfit, some bubble solution, and a blow torch (getting the cops called and barely escaping with our hearing intact) that this would become an enduring art project. But the Hydrogen Economy grant proposal was accepted and we built it and brought it to Yuri’s Night, the Fire Arts Festival, and Burningman, all in 2008.
My contribution to this project was welding the steel frames (six per level) that bolt together to form the chamber. Then Dyche and I drove the Labs truck out and were the first Labsters on the playa, a week before the event, putting the damn thing together. Good times.
